In recognition of his profound influence on oral and maxillofacial sciences, Dr. Jerry Bouquot was recently honored by Oral Pathology 360 during its International Oral Diseases Case Presentation Conference, held this year in Chennai, India.
Dr. Bouquot is a clinical professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry and WVU Dental.
As part of the international conference, Bouquot was the first individual to be featured in the organization’s video tribute series – “From Experience to Inspiration: Honoring the Legends of IODCPC.” The video tribute was shared with attendees from more than 40 countries as a gesture of gratitude, and it is available on YouTube.
The series was created by Oral Pathology 360 to honor individuals whose life’s work has shaped the direction of oral and maxillofacial sciences, inspired others and provided a legacy of wisdom, integrity and generosity. As part of its mission, the non-profit organization supports global advancement of education, research and collaboration to improve patient outcomes.
During the tribute, the organization shared that Bouquot “has shaped oral pathology over more than five decades with his pioneering research, exceptional teaching and global mentorship” and is “a global leader in oral pathology, educator, mentor and pioneer whose work continues to guide and elevate the field.
“Through his relentless pursuit of knowledge, leadership, advancing the profession and profound mentorship, Professor J. E. Bouquot’s legacy continues to inspire generations worldwide. His life’s work stands as a testament to dedication, innovation and service to humanity. It is with deep admiration that we honor him as a true pioneer and an enduring inspiration to all.”
Bouquot has authored several hundred publications, presented more than 1,300 lectures worldwide and mentored numerous students and researchers. He is among the top 1.2% most-cited oral pathology researchers worldwide, with his research being sited more than 11,000 times and translated into several languages. Through his extensive research, Bouquot has named more than three dozen new oral diseases.
In addition to this recent recognition by Oral Pathology 360, Bouquot has received several honors for his work including the St. George National Award, the highest award given by the American Cancer Society for lifetime efforts in cancer control; the Bridgeman Distinguished Dentist Award, the highest honor bestowed by the West Virginia Dental Association; the Presidential Certificate of Appreciation presented by the American Academy of Oral Medicine; honorary life membership in the International Association of Oral Pathologists; and honorary membership in the Mexican Association of Oral Pathology & Medicine, the first U.S. native to earn the honor, among many others.
